The Eternal Voice: Ahmad Muriz Che Rose on Reawakening the Magic of Sharifah Aini with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
There are stars, there are legends, and then there is Sharifah Aini — a woman whose voice did not simply soundtrack Malaysian life but became part of its emotional architecture.
Even now, more than a decade after her passing, her songs linger with astonishing intimacy: drifting through wedding halls, family living rooms, roadside cafés and late-night radio waves with a tenderness that feels almost supernatural. In Malaysia, Sharifah Aini is not remembered merely with admiration. She is remembered with feeling.
And this June, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra intends to transform that feeling into something gloriously cinematic.
On 6 June 2026, the majestic Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS will become the setting for A Tribute to Sharifah Aini, an opulent orchestral celebration honouring one of the nation’s most beloved musical treasures.
Yet beneath the glamour, nostalgia and grandeur lies something far more personal: an act of profound reverence from conductor Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, who approaches the evening not simply as a concert, but as an emotional responsibility.“It is a great honour to be entrusted to lead a programme dedicated to a legendary artist, especially for a Biduanita Negara like Sharifah Aini,” Muriz says with unmistakable sincerity. “I grew up with her songs, and now I have the privilege of collaborating with remarkable singers from her era alongside younger artistes who are currently at the height of their careers. I regard her legacy of songs as national treasures.”
National treasures. The phrase feels entirely fitting.Dubbed “EMI’s golden child”, Sharifah Aini recorded nearly 700 songs and released more than 100 albums across an astonishingly prolific career spanning over three decades.
Gold and Platinum records followed with ease. Yet numbers alone cannot explain her extraordinary grip on the Malaysian imagination. The true power of Sharifah Aini lay in her ability to make listeners feel understood.
Her voice possessed grandeur without distance, elegance without coldness. She sang heartbreak as though she had lived every word herself.
Muriz believes that emotional sincerity is precisely why her music continues to transcend generations.“The beauty of her melodies renders them timeless,” he reflects. “They continue to appeal even to younger generations today, and even more deeply to those who lived through that era.”
That timelessness forms the emotional heartbeat of this concert.
Rather than creating a museum-like reproduction of Sharifah Aini’s catalogue, Muriz and the MPO have chosen something infinitely more exciting: reinvention with reverence.
Every arrangement for the evening has been newly conceived, carefully tailored to the vocal strengths and interpretative styles of the featured performers, among them Khadijah Ibrahim, Salamiah Hassan, Asmidar and Shiha Zikir.
“For this concert, all the featured artists will present newly crafted arrangements created specifically to honour the spirit and legacy of Sharifah Aini’s music,” Muriz explains. “Much of the artistic work lies in thoughtfully matching the right songs to the distinctive vocal styles of the performers.”The result promises to be lavishly emotional rather than merely nostalgic. Imagine Sharifah Aini’s immortal melodies unfurling beneath the sweeping majesty of a full orchestra, where familiar songs suddenly reveal hidden textures, new depths and cinematic scale.
Yet Muriz is adamant about one thing: no one is attempting to replicate Sharifah Aini herself.
“There is, and will only ever be, one Sharifah Aini,” he says firmly. “The singers are not here to replace her extraordinary vocal prowess. Each artist approaches the repertoire not as imitation, but as tribute.”
That distinction matters deeply. In lesser hands, tribute concerts can easily slip into impersonation. Here, however, the intention feels far more sophisticated.
Each performer will bring their own emotional vocabulary to the music while preserving the soul of the originals. It is not about recreating the past exactly as it was, but allowing its spirit to breathe again for contemporary audiences.“These renewed renditions, supported by the grandeur and richness of the MPO, are intended to celebrate her enduring influence while allowing her music to resonate meaningfully with today’s audiences,” Muriz says.
And perhaps nowhere does his admiration become more poignant than when discussing Di Malam Persandingan, the haunting Middle Eastern-inspired classic he personally cherishes most.
“This is certainly a difficult question,” he laughs softly when asked to choose a favourite among her immense catalogue. “But if I were to single out one song, it would be Di Malam Persandingan.”
What moves him is not personal nostalgia, but Sharifah Aini’s astonishing emotional command.
“There is something profoundly moving in the way she delivered the song,” he reflects. “It is that emotional depth which has given the song a special place in my heart.”
Emotional depth. That phrase may ultimately define Sharifah Aini’s enduring brilliance more than any award, sales figure or title ever could. In today’s culture of fleeting trends and disposable virality, Sharifah Aini’s legacy feels almost rebellious in its permanence. Her music reminds us that sincerity never expires. That elegance still matters. That songs created with honesty possess the rare ability to outlive generations.
This concert, then, is far more than an evening of beloved hits. It is an affirmation of Malaysian musical heritage presented with the sophistication, glamour and orchestral magnificence it deserves.
Muriz hopes audiences will leave carrying more than nostalgia alone.
“Sharifah Aini’s music is timeless,” he says. “Through the MPO’s sensitive rendition and expert interpretation, these works are given new breath, like a new life.”
And perhaps that is exactly what awaits inside Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS next month: not simply remembrance, but resurrection.
For longtime admirers, the evening will feel like reuniting with an old love.
For younger audiences, it may become the moment they finally understand why Sharifah Aini remains untouchable in Malaysia’s cultural memory. Some voices entertain for a season.
Sharifah Aini’s voice became eternal.
