The Coolest Shade of Precision: How IWC’s Pool-Blue Ingenieur Automatic 35 Rewrites a Design Icon

There is something quietly radical about restraint. In an era where luxury watches often compete through ever-larger cases, louder complications and increasingly theatrical aesthetics, IWC Schaffhausen has chosen a different path.

Its latest Ingenieur Automatic 35 does not shout for attention. Instead, it earns it with confidence, proportion and one exquisitely judged splash of colour.

The new Ingenieur Automatic 35 (Ref. IW324902) introduces a striking new dial shade simply called Pool—a fresh, luminous aquatic blue that instantly transforms one of modern watchmaking’s purest designs without compromising its character.

It is not turquoise, nor ice blue, nor mint. It sits somewhere between the serenity of still water and the brilliance of sunlight dancing across its surface, lending Gérald Genta’s legendary integrated-bracelet masterpiece an unexpectedly contemporary personality.

“Our new Pool color is a fresh, radiant aquatic shade that feels made for summer – and it brings a surprising and vibrant new expression to the Ingenieur. The dial captures light in a beautiful way, and it perfectly complements the clean lines and the refined proportions of the Genta-inspired integrated bracelet design,” says Christian Knoop, Creative Director at IWC Schaffhausen.

That observation perfectly captures why this latest Ingenieur feels so compelling. Colour is rarely just colour. Here, it becomes atmosphere.

The 35mm stainless-steel case demonstrates that elegant proportions have returned to the forefront of luxury watchmaking. Compact without appearing diminutive, it wears with remarkable versatility while remaining faithful to the architectural discipline that has defined the Ingenieur for half a century.

At the centre of the composition lies the Ingenieur’s signature Grid dial, formed by an intricate arrangement of finely engraved lines and squares that create remarkable visual depth.

As light shifts throughout the day, the textured surface appears to ripple beneath the Pool finish, while rhodium-plated hands and applied Super-LumiNova® indices maintain crisp legibility in every environment.

The watch’s celebrated bezel, secured by five functional screws, remains one of the collection’s unmistakable signatures. Equally impressive is the integrated stainless-steel bracelet, whose polished centre links contrast beautifully against satin-finished H-links.

The result is a mesmerising dialogue between brushed and polished surfaces that constantly catches and releases light, ensuring the watch never appears quite the same twice.

This meticulous finishing continues throughout the case. Satin-brushed planes meet mirror-polished edges with the precision expected from Schaffhausen’s master craftsmen.

Turn the watch over and a sapphire crystal case back reveals the automatic Calibre 47110, complete with Geneva stripes, circular graining, a gold-plated oscillating weight and a practical 42-hour power reserve—an elegant reminder that technical beauty deserves to be seen as much as worn.

Yet no discussion of the Ingenieur can ignore the extraordinary legacy behind its silhouette.

When legendary Geneva designer Gérald Genta conceived the original Ingenieur SL Reference 1832 in 1976, he did far more than design another luxury sports watch. He helped define an entirely new category. His vision fused industrial strength with sculptural elegance, proving that engineering could possess undeniable style.

Nearly five decades later, that philosophy remains remarkably intact. The 2023 revival in the Ingenieur Automatic 40 successfully reintroduced Genta’s vision to a new generation, while the arrival of the 35mm collection has broadened its appeal without sacrificing authenticity.

This year’s Watches and Wonders Geneva further strengthened the family. Alongside the new Pool edition, IWC unveiled the Ingenieur Automatic 35 with a deep blue dial (Ref. IW324907) and an opulent version featuring an 18-carat 5N gold case with a diamond-set bezel (Ref. IW324911). Together with the existing silver-plated, black-dial and full 18-carat gold references, the collection now spans six distinct interpretations of one enduring design language.

Behind every Ingenieur, however, stands a manufacture whose own history is every bit as fascinating as the watches it produces.

Founded in 1868 by American engineer Florentine Ariosto Jones, who established the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen, IWC combined Swiss craftsmanship with advanced industrial engineering from the very beginning. That engineering-first philosophy continues to define the maison today.

Long recognised as a pioneer in titanium and ceramic, IWC continues pushing material science through Ceratanium® and its advanced engineering division XPL, whose innovations are developed for some of the world’s harshest environments, from jet aviation to human spaceflight.

It is a reminder that IWC’s greatest luxury has never been ornamentation alone, but performance elevated by beauty.

The new Pool-blue Ingenieur Automatic 35 encapsulates that philosophy with remarkable clarity. It is not merely a fresh colourway. It is proof that true icons evolve not by abandoning their identity, but by revealing familiar brilliance through an entirely new light.

The new Pool-blue Ingenieur Automatic 35 watch by IWC Schaffhausen retails at RM 43,800 and is available now in all IWC Schaffhausen boutiques and online stores worldwide.
