There is something quietly revealing about the evolution of the tablet. When Samsung introduced the original Galaxy Tab in 2010, the category was still defining itself; by 2014, the Galaxy Tab S had established Samsung’s premium tablet proposition around a Super AMOLED display, elegant portability and increasingly serious productivity.
The first Tab S arrived in 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch forms at just 6.6mm thin. More than a decade later, the new Galaxy Tab S12 Series feels less like another tablet iteration than a declaration of where the category is heading: towards the intelligent, beautifully portable workspace.Comprising the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S12+, the latest generation places Samsung’s considerable display, semiconductor and mobile expertise behind a proposition that feels particularly pertinent to contemporary Malaysian life. Work on the train, attend a virtual class between appointments, edit a campaign from a café, sketch a new collection, review a presentation at home or simply settle into an evening of streaming: the distinction between professional device and personal companion is becoming beautifully irrelevant.
At 5.1mm, the Tab S12 Ultra is Samsung’s thinnest Galaxy Tab yet, while the Tab S12+ expands to a 12.6-inch display with slimmer bezels than its predecessor. The Ultra retains its imposing 14.6-inch canvas. Both employ Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology reaching up to 1,600 nits, with Vision Booster dynamically adjusting brightness according to surrounding light. The effect is not merely technical. For photographers, designers and creators, screen real estate becomes intellectual real estate: more space to see, compare, refine and imagine.
The aesthetic is appropriately restrained. Available in Gray and Silver, the palette gives the machines a quietly architectural presence rather than shouting for attention.
It is a familiar Samsung design philosophy—technology as an object of refinement rather than ornament—now distilled into an exceptionally thin silhouette.Inside, however, the temperament is anything but restrained. Samsung says its new 3nm processor delivers up to 61 per cent faster NPU processing, 19 per cent faster CPU performance and 17 per cent improved GPU performance than the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra. A redesigned 3D Vapor Chamber manages heat during demanding workloads, while IP68 water and dust resistance adds reassurance to a device intended to travel.
Battery life is equally serious: up to 23 hours on the Ultra and 21 hours on the S12+, with 45W charging taking the battery from zero to full in approximately 95 minutes.
The more fascinating evolution, though, is what happens when hardware meets intelligence.
Running Android 17 with One UI 9, Galaxy AI turns the expansive display into a flexible three-part workspace. Notes, lectures, research and AI assistance can coexist through Multi Window, while the bundled ergonomic S Pen transforms handwriting, annotation and sketching into wonderfully natural extensions of the hand.“The Galaxy Tab S12 Series is designed for people who are constantly exploring new ideas, developing new skills and bringing their ambitions to life,” says Jay Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience Office, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. His observation captures the philosophical shift: the tablet is no longer simply somewhere to consume information; it is becoming somewhere to do something with it.
The ecosystem makes that proposition considerably more compelling. The Book Cover Keyboard Slim introduces a more conventional workstation experience, complete with the Galaxy AI Key.
A six-month trial of Google AI Pro provides access to advanced AI capabilities, while Gemini Notebook can bring notes, images, recordings and files together, turning disparate fragments of information into summaries, podcasts and quizzes. For the creative community, the arrival of Adobe Photoshop pre-loaded on Galaxy Tab S12—the first time Photoshop has been pre-loaded on an Android tablet—is particularly significant. Optimised for the tablet and S Pen, it brings professional image-making closer to the immediacy of drawing on paper.
Notability, Goodnotes, LumaFusion, Notion and Clip Studio Paint extend the proposition into study, video, organisation and digital art.
This is perhaps the most compelling chapter in Samsung’s tablet story: from the original Galaxy Tab’s experiment in mobility, through the 2014 Tab S’s emphasis on exceptional displays, to an era in which AI, creative software and sophisticated hardware converge.
Samsung Electronics itself has evolved enormously since its establishment in 1969, growing from a Korean electronics manufacturer into a global technology company spanning mobile, displays, semiconductors, appliances and more.
The Galaxy Tab S12 consequently feels less like a solitary gadget and more like a beautifully engineered gateway into Samsung’s broader technological universe—and, perhaps more importantly, into the increasingly fluid way Malaysians live, learn and work.
In Malaysia, the series arrives 7 October 2026, in Gray and Silver. Until 8 November, eligible customers can purchase the range from RM127.75 per month, with selected models receiving bundled applications, accessories and up to RM500 rebate at checkout. The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra starts at RM5,999 for 256GB Wi-Fi, while the S12+ starts at RM4,999.
For a generation that refuses to separate ambition from everyday life, that may be the Galaxy Tab S12’s most persuasive achievement: it does not ask where work ends and creativity begins. It simply gives both more room to flourish.
