Shanghai becomes a theatre of fashion-fuelled self-expression as photographer John Yuyi turns his lens towards Jolin, the undisputed force of C-pop, for a new Maison Valentino campaign conceived under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele.
Against saturated backdrops, silhouettes acquire an almost cinematic intensity, each frame a study in contrast, character and conviction. There is no timid pursuit of perfection here, no suggestion that elegance must behave itself.Instead, Valentino proposes a more compelling proposition: that true glamour begins when personal identity refuses to be diluted.
Unveiled as Jolin expands her relationship with the Roman Maison in her new role as Global Brand Ambassador, the campaign marks a significant evolution in a partnership that began in February 2024. More than a celebrity dressing exercise, it celebrates the chemistry between an artist who has continually reinvented herself and a fashion house whose identity has always accommodated the extraordinary.
Its visual language is boldly graphic, its silhouettes sharply defined, its colours unapologetically saturated. Authenticity and individual expression are not merely fashionable slogans; they are the ideas animating the encounter between personality and clothing. And who better to embody this spirit than Jolin? Widely recognised as the Queen of C-pop, the Taiwanese singer has built a formidable career through musical experimentation, spectacular performances and an ever-evolving visual identity. Her ascent is a story of ambition, discipline and artistic reinvention, one in which pop stardom becomes a platform for challenging expectations rather than simply satisfying them.
Across a career spanning decades, she has demonstrated an instinct for transformation, moving between musical styles, elaborate stage productions and striking fashion statements without surrendering her individuality. In Valentino, she finds a creative counterpart that understands the power of dressing not merely to impress, but to communicate.
The clothes, naturally, are worthy of the occasion. Drawing from Valentino Interferenze Fall/Winter 2026–27, the campaign places the collection’s expressive silhouettes in conversation with accessories that have earned their own place in fashion history. The Valentino Garavani Rockstud Spike bag, with its tactile leather and unmistakable pyramid studs, commands attention without requiring an introduction. The Rockstud pumps and flats offer a similarly persuasive marriage of femininity and defiance, while the Valentino Garavani Stud Up sneakers bring a contemporary, streetwise sensibility to the Maison’s more polished vocabulary.
Together, they suggest that modern luxury is not a question of dressing for one particular occasion, but of possessing the imagination to make every occasion your own.
Therein lies the enduring intelligence of Rockstud. First introduced in 2010, the motif draws inspiration from the architectural details of Rome, translating the city’s characteristic interplay of classical grandeur and rugged materiality into a modern design signature.
Its pyramidal studs have since travelled across bags, shoes and other accessories, becoming one of the most recognisable emblems in contemporary luxury. Yet its continued relevance rests on something more substantial than recognition alone: an instantly identifiable design that remains adaptable to changing tastes, personal styling and successive creative interpretations.
To understand why this matters, one must return to the extraordinary foundations of the Maison. Founded in Rome in 1960 by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino grew into an international fashion institution on the strength of its founder’s exceptional understanding of beauty, proportion and feminine glamour.Garavani’s celebrated use of colour, his exquisite couture workmanship and his instinct for occasion dressing established a visual language that could be romantic without being sentimental, sumptuous without losing discipline. His legacy was never simply about making women look beautiful; it was about understanding the transformative emotional power of clothing.
Subsequent creative chapters have expanded that inheritance rather than erased it. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, appointed co-creative directors in 2008, brought renewed contemporary relevance to the house.
Following Chiuri’s departure in 2016, Piccioli continued as sole creative director, deepening Valentino’s relationship with colour, couture craftsmanship and an increasingly individualistic expression of femininity. Alessandro Michele, appointed in 2024, now brings his own richly layered sensibility to the Maison, embracing historical references, expressive ornamentation and the productive tension between tradition and modernity. The point is not to imitate the past, but to keep it creatively alive.
Interferenze, with its very suggestion of overlapping signals and unexpected encounters, is an apt expression of that philosophy. Fashion becomes most interesting when different ideas coexist: heritage and irreverence, precision and exuberance, familiarity and surprise.Under Michele, Valentino’s Roman identity remains a point of departure rather than a restrictive formula.
For the discerning customer, this distinction matters. A Rockstud bag or a beautifully constructed ready-to-wear piece should not be understood merely as a seasonal trophy, acquired in pursuit of a fleeting trend. Its appeal lies in the convergence of design identity, material selection, construction and the cultural history that gives the object meaning.
No luxury purchase is automatically timeless, nor does a celebrated label guarantee future value. But a distinctive design with genuine staying power, thoughtfully made and versatile enough to accompany different chapters of one’s life, offers a more compelling proposition than novelty for novelty’s sake.
That is the enduring promise of Valentino: the opportunity to acquire something that speaks to personal taste while participating in a larger fashion conversation.
With Jolin at its centre, this new campaign makes that conversation feel gloriously immediate. She brings the confidence of a performer who understands reinvention; Michele supplies the visual imagination; and Rockstud provides the recognisable punctuation.
The result is a celebration of luxury that neither whispers apologetically nor shouts without purpose.Fashion, after all, should inspire desire, but the most enduring desire is rarely about possession alone. It is about finding an object that expresses something you recognise in yourself.
In this electrifying new chapter, Valentino invites us to do precisely that: to embrace our contradictions, sharpen our individuality and dress with the audacity to be remembered.
