It was the summer of 1996, somewhere beneath the warm midnight skies of San Diego, California, when ten-year-old Ryan first understood that the universe could make a boy feel very small—and very fortunate.
He had travelled from Kuching with his parents to visit his uncle, whose family had settled in California. One languid summer night, his older cousin Danny led him away from the house and across a grassy field. They lay supine beneath the darkness, shoulders almost touching, their eyes fixed upwards.Above them, stars were scattered across the heavens like diamonds being sewn into a yard of rich velvet. Ryan had never seen anything quite so magnificent. Then, suddenly, a cluster of brilliant streaks tore across the sky: incandescent, impossibly fast, gone almost as soon as they appeared.
“Did you see that?” Ryan whispered.
Danny nodded. “Meteors.”
The word felt strangely familiar. Perhaps Ryan had encountered it years earlier in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He knew, instinctively, that these fleeting celestial visitors belonged to another world.
Technically, Danny was right to call the streaks meteors rather than meteorites: a meteor is the luminous phenomenon produced when a space rock enters Earth’s atmosphere; a meteorite is the surviving fragment that reaches the ground. It is an important distinction—and one that becomes unexpectedly poetic three decades later.Thirty years on, Ryan had built a successful entrepreneurial life in Kuala Lumpur and developed an increasingly serious appetite for fine timepieces, particularly limited editions.
Then, one languid Saturday, he arrived at The Exchange TRX intending to buy new gym shoes and a pair of Daffodils from Christian Louboutin for an impending black-tie wedding.
Passing the Bell & Ross boutique, however, Ryan stopped.
There, beneath the lights, was the new BR-X5 Meteorite.
He froze.
The watch seemed to possess the curious gravity of something both familiar and impossibly distant. Ryan stepped inside. When the sales assistant placed it upon his wrist and explained that its dial was fashioned from genuine Muonionalusta meteorite, the decades collapsed.Suddenly, he was ten again, lying on that Californian grass, watching the heavens ignite.
And that is precisely where Bell & Ross has achieved something rather clever.
The BR-X5 Meteorite is not merely a BR-X5 with an exotic dial. It is an unusually persuasive collision between contemporary Swiss manufacture watchmaking and geological history. Introduced as part of the BR-X5 collection launched in 2022, the model was conceived as an “Advanced Time Instrument”: architectural, functionalist and deliberately forward-looking.
Its centrepiece is spectacular. Bell & Ross uses Muonionalusta, an iron meteorite officially recorded in Sweden in 1906 and classified as an IVA iron meteorite. The material is approximately 4.5 billion years old—effectively contemporary with the birth of our solar system—and reveals its extraordinary Widmanstätten structure when cut and treated.
These crystalline geometries formed through unimaginably slow cooling in space and cannot simply be manufactured to order. Every slice therefore possesses its own mineral signature.More impressive still, Bell & Ross has machined the dial directly from solid meteorite. There is no conventional brass foundation beneath it: it is genuinely monolithic, with the dial feet passing through the meteorite itself.
A thin PVD treatment protects the surface while retaining its natural character. Under changing light, the dial moves between grey, black and metallic reflections, almost as though the watch is carrying a fragment of deep space in permanent motion.
Yet this is Bell & Ross, so celestial romance never overwhelms functionality. Polished, rhodium-plated “bathtub” indices are filled with white Super-LumiNova®, while skeletonised rhodium-plated hands provide a crisp blue nocturnal glow.
The result is not decorative extravagance but disciplined legibility—the Maison’s aviation-derived philosophy translated into something considerably more luxurious.
The 41mm satin-polished and polished steel case is equally compelling. Its open-worked construction visually lightens the architecture, while the multilayer sandwich structure is secured by four exposed screws, the unmistakable BR-X5 signature.Beneath the sapphire case-back beats the exclusive BR-CAL.323 manufacture calibre, produced specifically for Bell & Ross, COSC-certified and offering approximately 70 hours of power reserve, alongside a large date display and power-reserve indication. Water resistance is 100 metres, while collectors can choose between a steel bracelet and black rubber strap.
This is where the watchmaking conversation becomes especially interesting.
Meteorite has become one of haute horlogerie’s most seductive materials precisely because it resists industrial uniformity. The material is finite, difficult to source consistently and inherently unpredictable. Cutting, stabilising, finishing and protecting iron meteorite demands considerable expertise because its appeal depends upon preserving the natural crystalline structure while making it suitable for the wrist.
The Financial Times has noted that meteorite watches have become increasingly sought-after for precisely this combination of rarity, provenance and individuality.
But collectors should distinguish desirability from guaranteed investment performance. A meteorite dial can strengthen a watch’s scarcity narrative and secondary-market appeal, but resale value is ultimately determined by the brand, reference, condition, provenance, production numbers, market demand and whether the model becomes discontinued.Auction evidence nevertheless demonstrates the phenomenon: a meteorite-dial Rolex Daytona realised €42,900 at Dorotheum in 2025, while other meteorite watches have achieved striking auction premiums.
For serious collectors, then, the BR-X5 Meteorite’s strongest proposition is not speculative profit. It is material authenticity married to mechanical substance.
Only 250 examples exist, and no two meteorite dials are identical. That is genuine scarcity, rather than merely a fashionable colourway.
To understand why this matters within Bell & Ross, one must look backwards.
Founded in 1994 by Carlos-A. Rosillo and Bruno Belamich, two friends united by watchmaking and aviation, Bell & Ross built its identity around professional aviation instruments and uncompromising readability.In 2005 came the revolutionary BR-01, inspired by aircraft cockpit instruments and responsible for establishing the now-iconic “round in a square” aesthetic. From there came the professional BR-03, urban BR-05, manufacture-led BR-X5 and avant-garde BR-X3.
This is why the BR-X5 Meteorite feels credible rather than contrived. Bell & Ross has always understood that an instrument can be beautiful precisely because its beauty originates in purpose.
Here, however, the purpose has expanded: the watch remains a precision instrument, but its dial is simultaneously a geological artefact—a tiny, wearable record of cosmic time.
Back inside the boutique, Ryan kept looking.
The longer he wore the BR-X5 Meteorite, the less interested he became in the shoes. When the sales assistant mentioned the production of just 250 pieces worldwide, his decision was made.
He bought it.
Ryan left the Bell & Ross boutique victoriously, the meteorite gleaming beneath the Kuala Lumpur lights.
The gym shoes could wait. The Daffodils could wait. Even the black-tie dinner could wait.
Because watches come and go.
But a watch containing a bona fide fragment of outer space—billions of years old, individually patterned and limited to 250 pieces?That does not come around very often.
Just like those blazing meteors Ryan saw crossing the Californian sky when he was ten.
