MYSLF Intense: The New Code Of Masculine Seduction

Mexico City is still moving when Austin Butler steps into the frame. Somewhere beyond the controlled choreography of the set, the metropolis breathes, pulses and refuses to stand still.

Inside, the atmosphere is charged: cameras are positioned, lights cut through the darkness, and director Romain Gavras is preparing his next move. Choreographer Damien Jalet’s kinetic language is about to transform the ordinary into something hypnotic. Then the music begins, and Butler moves.

Not as a character.

As himself.

That distinction is everything.

For the new YSL Beauty campaign for MYSLF Eau de Toilette Intense, Butler is not hiding behind an invented persona. He dances, struts, laughs and moves through a succession of cinematic worlds with the relaxed confidence of a man liberated from expectation.

The film, Dancing With MYSLF, deliberately turns the conventions of fragrance advertising inside out, set to a remix of Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself”. Butler had wanted to work with Gavras for some time; he was equally enthusiastic about collaborating with Jalet, whose work he had admired previously.

It is a beautifully rebellious proposition for a fragrance whose very name has always carried an imperative: MYSLF.

And now comes MYSLF Eau de Toilette Intense, the latest and arguably most compelling evolution of the franchise. Where many flankers simply amplify an established formula, this one recalibrates the MYSLF signature around a darker, more tactile idea of sensuality.

It remains fresh enough to feel unmistakably like an Eau de Toilette, yet delivers eight-hour longevity through a composition that moves from mineral brightness to woody depth and, finally, the intimate warmth of skin musk.

The opening is immediate: bergamot arrives clean, bright and zesty, giving the fragrance an almost crystalline freshness. Then the composition changes temperature. Orange blossom emerges at the heart, its floral character deliberately contradictory—fresh and luminous, yet rich and sensual.

Beneath it lies an enveloping architecture of warm woods, intensified with refined patchouli heart sustainably sourced in Indonesia. Finally, white musk draws everything closer to the body, leaving the impression not of perfume sitting upon the skin, but of something belonging there.

Minerally fresh. Intensely musky. Radically sensual.

Perfumer Daniela Andrier puts the entire philosophy with characteristic precision: “A bold masculine flower, contrasted with fresh musky minerality and intense woody sensuality.”

That contrast is precisely what makes MYSLF Eau de Toilette Intense fascinating.

The original MYSLF established its identity around the now-signature encounter between bergamot, orange blossom and woods. Intense does not discard that DNA; it pushes it into more tactile territory. The orange blossom becomes richer, the woods darker and warmer, while white musk introduces an unmistakably intimate second-skin effect.

The result is less about projecting conventional masculine power across a room than creating a magnetic aura around the wearer.

There is something rather sophisticated about that.

Contemporary masculinity in fragrance is increasingly moving away from the old vocabulary of brute force—leather, smoke, tar, aggressive spices—and towards texture, contradiction and skin.

MYSLF Intense understands the shift without becoming soft. Its sensuality is muscular. Its floral heart is not decorative. Its musk is not coy. Its woods provide the necessary gravity.

And the longevity is no afterthought. YSL positions the fragrance as eight-hour long-lasting, retaining the freshness expected of an Eau de Toilette while building an enduring woody-musk trail.

The brand has also equipped the bottle with a new atomiser delivering a spray duration three times longer than the existing MYSLF Eau de Parfum, creating a more immersive application experience.

Then there is that bottle.

The MYSLF monolith has been stripped back—literally. For the first time, its architectural silhouette becomes see-through, revealing an intensely deep grey juice beneath the unmistakable black Cassandre at its heart.

It feels like an object caught between transparency and mystery: recognisably YSL, but newly exposed. The bottle is also recyclable, with at least 10 per cent recycled glass, while its packaging is FSC™ MIX certified.

Austin Butler, naturally, understands the psychology of transformation better than most.

As the face of MYSLF since its launch in 2023, he has become closely associated with the fragrance’s idea of individuality. Yet for this campaign, the actor was particularly interested in abandoning the solemnity that can weigh down luxury advertising.

“I wanted to work with Romain for a long time,” Butler explained, noting that Gavras wanted to move away from the expected dramatic fragrance campaign and simply have fun. He describes the new fragrance itself as warm and recalls the idea of it feeling like a “second skin”.

That instinct feels perfectly aligned with MYSLF Intense.

After all, Butler’s own relationship with fragrance is unusually emotional. He has spoken about scent as a tool for entering character, something capable of transporting him psychologically. Yet MYSLF asks the opposite question: what happens when scent helps you leave the character behind?

That question takes us back to YSL.

The beauty empire founded around Yves Saint Laurent’s radical understanding of identity was never content merely to decorate. Saint Laurent wanted beauty to possess the same passion, attitude and freedom as his fashion. In fragrance, that philosophy found one of its most provocative masculine expressions in Yves Saint Laurent Pour Homme, launched in 1971.

The campaign famously featured Saint Laurent himself nude, transforming fragrance advertising into an act of audacious self-expression.

That spirit remains embedded in YSL Beauty’s DNA.

MYSLF Intense simply translates it for a new generation.

The bottle is architectural. The juice is grey. The flower is masculine. The musk is intimate. The woods are dark. The freshness is mineral. The campaign dances rather than poses.

And Austin Butler, moving through Mexico City beneath Gavras’s camera and Jalet’s choreography, embodies the essential proposition with enviable ease: masculinity does not have to perform itself to be powerful.

Sometimes the most seductive man in the room is simply the one who has stopped pretending to be anyone else.
