Love, On Repeat: Burberry’s Qixi Reverie Between London Rain and the Stars of the Milky Way

Every Qixi, they returned.

Not to the same London record shop where they had first fallen in love sometime in the mid-1990s, but to a quiet café hidden beneath rain-soaked trees in Kuala Lumpur. He arrived with a weathered guitar case, having flown from London, then Hong Kong, then wherever music had carried him.

She arrived in immaculate tailoring, her father’s empire now partly her own, yet still wearing the smile that had once captivated the shy guitarist from an independent Britpop trio.

Three decades earlier, they had hidden their romance between lectures, rehearsals and vinyl records. He was the son of a humble Hong Kong clerk. She was the daughter of a Malaysian business magnate.

Their shared language was music until reality intervened. Her father summoned her home before graduation, convinced that love could never rival legacy.

He promised only one thing.

“Every Qixi, I will find my way back to you.”

Like the Weaver Princess and the Cowherd, divided by the celestial river of the Milky Way and granted but one reunion each year upon a bridge woven by faithful magpies, theirs became an unlikely modern myth.

Students whispered about them. Musicians immortalised them in lyrics. Lovers searched cafés every seventh day of the seventh lunar month, convinced the couple still appeared, quietly keeping a promise stronger than time itself.

It is precisely this extraordinary tenderness hidden inside ordinary moments that Daniel Lee appears to have been chasing while imagining Burberry’s 2026 Qixi collection.

Rather than illustrating fantasy, the Chief Creative Officer found inspiration in something infinitely more seductive: coincidence.

A glance across a record store. Two strangers reaching for the same album. Music dissolving hesitation before words ever could.

“Music brings people together. In our campaign, Zhang Jingyi and Zhang Kangle bring their own unique interpretations to the characters,” says Lee.

That sentiment becomes the emotional heartbeat of Love, On Repeat, Burberry’s beautifully restrained campaign film starring Burberry ambassador Zhang Jingyi alongside Burberry Beauty ambassador Zhang Kangle. Across three elegantly choreographed single-take scenes, a chance encounter slowly blossoms into enduring affection, proving that the most unforgettable romances rarely announce themselves with spectacle. They simply happen, then quietly refuse to disappear.

The accompanying capsule collection extends that same emotional language into clothing.

Created exclusively for Chinese Valentine’s Day, the collection introduces a bespoke Burberry logo composed from delicate heart-shaped lettering, while the house’s legendary Equestrian Knight receives a playful reinterpretation, its shield transformed into a heart—a subtle gesture that balances heritage with youthful optimism.

Menswear centres around the lightweight nylon Clapton hooded jacket alongside impeccably relaxed cotton jersey separates that speak to effortless metropolitan dressing.

For women, familiar Burberry signatures soften into dreamy shades of blush pink and crisp white. Dresses acquire an almost cinematic fluidity, while the House’s iconic handbags become love letters rendered in leather—pieces destined not merely to be carried, but treasured and gifted.

The restrained palette feels intentional. Pink evokes first love without cliché. White speaks of sincerity rather than innocence. Together they suggest permanence rather than passing infatuation.

Such emotional precision has always distinguished Burberry.

Founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, the visionary English outfitter forever changed fashion after inventing gabardine, the revolutionary weatherproof yet breathable fabric that ultimately gave birth to the trench coat.

Originally created for explorers and soldiers confronting unforgiving climates, the trench has since become one of fashion’s most enduring symbols of sophistication—proof that innovation and elegance need never exist separately.

For nearly 170 years, Burberry has evolved while remaining unmistakably British, yet its greatest strength may be its remarkable ability to converse fluently with cultures far beyond its birthplace.

Celebrating Qixi is therefore far more than seasonal marketing.

It acknowledges that luxury today is measured not only by craftsmanship but by cultural understanding.

Across China, Malaysia, Singapore and countless East Asian communities, Qixi continues to celebrate loyalty, longing and devotion—values that transcend language, geography and generation.

Even in an age governed by algorithms and fleeting attention spans, the ancient tale of the Weaver Princess and the Cowherd continues to remind us that true love demands patience, resilience and faith.

Burberry answers that timeless lesson with modern elegance.

Not through extravagant declarations, but through beautifully considered design, meaningful storytelling and garments destined to accompany life’s most intimate memories.

Perhaps that is why Love, On Repeat lingers long after its final frame.

Because somewhere between a London record shop, a blush-pink handbag, a heart-shaped knight’s shield and a promise renewed every Qixi, Burberry quietly suggests that the finest luxury one can ever possess is not merely exceptional style.

It is having someone worth returning to, year after year, beneath the same eternal stars.
